As a Senior Cloud Engineer at SecurEnds, Walter is responsible for building out the infrastructure that our application runs on. Learn more about Walter Beard:

What do you like most about your role or working at SecurEnds?

A large portion of Cloud Engineering is building out the infrastructure that our application runs on. I write terraform and ansible code that describes what I want the infrastructure to be, then run the code to create the infrastructure. It’s like playing with Legos. You start with a pile of assorted bits then give them structure and meaning and purpose. Seeing it all come online and start doing the work is very fulfilling.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I’m an avid reader.  I mostly read science fiction and fantasy, but I’ll devour anything that catches my interest. I’ll have several books going on different devices at any given time. I also lose myself in music. I would love to be able to play it as well as just listen, but I haven’t managed to learn by osmosis

What’s one food you cannot resist?

Anything hot. I’m a big fan of Mexican, Cajun, Thai, and Indian, wings… The hotter the better!

What’s your favorite line from a movie/book/song?

I have a couple.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we had a great success today.  We found another way that doesn’t work.”  This is from Chain Reaction, after an experiment to establish a stable fusion reaction failed.

“Progress, not perfection.”  I first heard it in the movie Equalizer.  The quote sums up so many different aspects of life.

Both quotes are an encouragement to face something that didn’t quite go as planned and learn from it.  After all, “experience is what you get just after you really needed it”.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Wait, I was supposed to grow up?  I wanted to be an astronaut, a mad scientist, or a musician.  Any or all of a dozen other careers as new things caught my interest.

What’s your go-to productivity trick?

Minimize distractions and interruptions.  Have a plan with enough flexibility to adjust for unexpected developments.  Document as you go, including adjustments to the plan and thought processes as they happen.  This will also help you get back into the flow when you need to pause and resume later.

Test your assumptions.  Test for the way things should work, test for the way things can be expected to break, test for things that should never happen. You’d be surprised how often “can’t happen” just did.

If you could snap your fingers and become an expert in something, what would it be?

Adulting.  Still haven’t quite gotten the hang of this whole “grownup” business.

What’s your favorite way to unwind after a busy day?

Hit the gym and work up a good sweat.

If you could only have three apps on your smartphone, which would you pick?

Music player, eBook reader, and an SMS/chat application.

What’s one hobby you’d love to get into?

Playing the guitar.  I have one.  It’s over there in the corner.  I look at it every so often and wonder why I’m not getting better at it.  It would probably help to take it out of the case and play it.

What fictional place would you most like to visit?

I would love to go see the dragons on Pern.
